Check out this video for the toy company Goldie Blocks. This company makes toys designed specifically to promote girls' attention to sciences and engineering. Do you recognize the song playing in the background? It's based on a song by The Beastie Boys called (appropriately enough) "Girls." What do you think of this ad using a variation of this song to promote their product? What is the purpose? See the lyrics to the song below the video. "Girls"

He said he would not give her play I asked him, "Please?" he said, "You may." Her pants were tight and that's ok If she would dance I would D.J. We took a walk down to the bay I hope she'll say, "Hey me and you should hit the hay!" I asked her out she said, "No way!" I should have probably guessed their gay So I broke North with no delay I heard she moved real far away That was two years ago this May I seen her just the other day Jockin' Mike D. to my dismay Girls - to do the dishes Girls - to clean up my room Girls - to do the laundry Girls - and in the bathroom Girls, that's all I really want is girls Two at a time I want girls With new wave hairdos I want girls I ought to whip out my girls, girls, girls, girls, girls! In a detailed response, reflect on the issues we briefly discussed in class on Tuesday. What considerations should teachers make when teaching or discussing sex and gender in school? Should teachers be discussing these topics in school at all? What does any of this have to do with The Taming of the Shrew?
Here are some of the materials we discussed about the California school district whose parents are upset about what is being discussed in their students' health classes. Where do you fall on this issue? What does this have to do with The Taming of the Shrew? |
